In this talk, professor Ramon L\u00f3pez de M\u00e1ntaras will share some thoughts on the intelligence of Artificial Intelligence. He will challenge the exaggerated perception of the potential of AI, pointing out that current systems have what Daniel Dennet called \u201cskills without understanding\u201d. This means that they lack basic knowledge about the world, which limits their understanding and language.<\/h5>\nHe will also argue how important it is to interact with the world in order to understand it. Finally, he will remind listeners of the current dangers of AI, such as its threat to privacy, the bias of algorithms and their potential to manipulate and misinform, as well as the ethical responsibility of designers, advocating for stricter regulation of AI and better education about its risks and benefits so we can take advantage of its potential responsibly.<\/h5>\n

RAMON L\u00d3PEZ DE M\u00c1NTARAS<\/h2><\/div><\/span><\/div><\/p>\nProfessor at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (CSIC)<\/h3>\n
<\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text css=””]Ramon L\u00f3pez de M\u00e1ntaras<\/strong> is a CSIC Emeritus Research Professor at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA), of which he was founder and director. He is also a visiting professor at Western University. A pioneer of artificial intelligence (AI) in Spain and Europe, he has been researching AI since 1975. He was a professor at the Faculty of Informatics of Barcelona and a professor at the Pierre et Marie Curie University in Paris.<\/p>\nThe author of more than 300 scientific works and the popular book 100 cosas que hay que saber sobre inteligencia artificial (\u201c100 things you need to know about artificial intelligence\u201d) (Cosetania, 2023), he has received the City of Barcelona Research Award (1982), the Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Award from the American Association of Artificial Intelligence (2011) and the Julio Rey Pastor National Research Award in Mathematics and ICT (2018). A member of the Institut d\u2019Estudis Catalans, he currently researches reasoning by analogy and causal and transfer learning.<\/p>\n

He will also argue how important it is to interact with the world in order to understand it. Finally, he will remind listeners of the current dangers of AI, such as its threat to privacy, the bias of algorithms and their potential to manipulate and misinform, as well as the ethical responsibility of designers, advocating for stricter regulation of AI and better education about its risks and benefits so we can take advantage of its potential responsibly.<\/h5>\n

RAMON L\u00d3PEZ DE M\u00c1NTARAS<\/h2><\/div><\/span><\/div><\/p>\nProfessor at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (CSIC)<\/h3>\n
<\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text css=””]Ramon L\u00f3pez de M\u00e1ntaras<\/strong> is a CSIC Emeritus Research Professor at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA), of which he was founder and director. He is also a visiting professor at Western University. A pioneer of artificial intelligence (AI) in Spain and Europe, he has been researching AI since 1975. He was a professor at the Faculty of Informatics of Barcelona and a professor at the Pierre et Marie Curie University in Paris.<\/p>\nThe author of more than 300 scientific works and the popular book 100 cosas que hay que saber sobre inteligencia artificial (\u201c100 things you need to know about artificial intelligence\u201d) (Cosetania, 2023), he has received the City of Barcelona Research Award (1982), the Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Award from the American Association of Artificial Intelligence (2011) and the Julio Rey Pastor National Research Award in Mathematics and ICT (2018). A member of the Institut d\u2019Estudis Catalans, he currently researches reasoning by analogy and causal and transfer learning.<\/p>\n

Professor at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (CSIC)<\/h3>\n
<\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text css=””]Ramon L\u00f3pez de M\u00e1ntaras<\/strong> is a CSIC Emeritus Research Professor at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA), of which he was founder and director. He is also a visiting professor at Western University. A pioneer of artificial intelligence (AI) in Spain and Europe, he has been researching AI since 1975. He was a professor at the Faculty of Informatics of Barcelona and a professor at the Pierre et Marie Curie University in Paris.<\/p>\n The author of more than 300 scientific works and the popular book 100 cosas que hay que saber sobre inteligencia artificial (\u201c100 things you need to know about artificial intelligence\u201d) (Cosetania, 2023), he has received the City of Barcelona Research Award (1982), the Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Award from the American Association of Artificial Intelligence (2011) and the Julio Rey Pastor National Research Award in Mathematics and ICT (2018).
