Data and AI: from data spaces to synthetic data

22 October 2026 | 11.00h to 11.45h

Synthetic data provides a powerful alternative for overcoming limitations in access to real-world data, preserving privacy, and accelerating the development of AI systems. In this session, three projects will showcase the value that synthetic data can bring to domains such as healthcare and mobility, explaining how it has been generated, under what conditions it has been used, and the role it has played in the training, validation, and deployment of AI models and applications.

Participants:

  • Jesús Pablo González, Chief Innovation Manager, Nemi Mobility Solutions

  • Diego Torres, Head of Technology, Peninsula Corportate Innovation

  • Cecilio Angulo, UPC Rector’s IA delegate , Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya

Ponents:

JESÚS PABLO GONZÁLEZ

Chief Innovation Manager, Nemi Mobility Solutions

Telecommunications Engineer and Innovation Manager at Nemi Mobility Solutions. With over fifteen years of professional experience, he specializes in leading innovation and technology transfer projects in fields such as robotics and artificial intelligence. He currently focuses on the strategic development of innovative solutions for sustainable mobility, demand-responsive transport and transport infrastructure.

Nemify: Data Spaces for the Efficient Design of On-Demand Transport in Rural and Peri-Urban Areas

Designing flexible public transport in rural and peri-urban areas is particularly challenging: mobility is dispersed, demand is often irregular, and large-scale datasets like those available in urban environments are not always accessible. Through the Nemify project, Nemi will demonstrate how data spaces can enhance transport planning by combining multiple data sources, including origin-destination matrices, mobility surveys, points of interest, and territorial data. The presentation will show how to transform these datasets into simulation scenarios to estimate potential demand, identify coverage gaps, and design more efficient on-demand transport services.

DIEGO TORRES

Head of Technology, Peninsula Corportate Innovation

Diego Torres és Head of Technology a Peninsula, on lidera l’estratègia tecnològica i el desenvolupament de solucions d’IA i dades. Enginyer i MBA, combina estratègia, producte i execució per portar la innovació en IA a projectes reals.

Synthetica: generate, validate and reuse synthetic data with confidence

Synthetica is a platform for generating synthetic data, validating its statistical quality and assessing its fit to the context of each use case. The platform connects to different data spaces and integrates with common analytical tools to support data analysis, information exploration and metadata generation. Synthetica allows you to create, validate and reuse synthetic data reliably and with full confidence.

CECILIO ANGULO

UPC Rector’s IA delegate , Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya

PhD in Sciences (UPC) and Full Professor of AI & Robotics at UPC, where he founded the IDEAI research centre. His work spans kernel methods, reinforcement learning, computer vision, robotics, recommender systems, and assistive technologies. Author of books and over 325 papers (h-index 37). He has led or participated in 45+ R&D projects, including 18 funded by the European Commission.

Agrixels - UPC Data Space Agro: A fully operational multisectoral ecosystem in the data economy

Agrixels is an initiative led by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) that aims to develop an agricultural information standard oriented toward artificial intelligence (AI)-based services for the agri-food sector. The main objective is to create an interoperable, high-value data space that enables data sharing and exploitation among different sector stakeholders, from farmers and cooperatives to public administrations and technology companies.

The project focuses on two main use cases:

  • Climate and environmental sustainability of farms.

  • Environmental impact of farms, specifically on the carbon footprint.
